Cataract Treatment

Understanding Cataracts: Expert Care in San Diego

If you're experiencing blurry vision, glare, or difficulty seeing at night, you might be developing a cataract. At Torrey Pines Eye Care, serving La Jolla and the wider San Diego community, we are dedicated to providing advanced diagnosis and personalized treatment plans for cataracts, helping our patients achieve optimal visual outcomes.

What Exactly is a Cataract?

Your eye contains a natural, clear lens that works like a camera lens, focusing light directly onto your retina to create sharp images. While perfectly clear at birth, this lens can gradually become cloudy over time, obstructing light and causing your vision to become hazy or dim. This cloudiness is known as a cataract. It's a natural part of aging for many, but it doesn't have to mean permanent vision loss.

State-of-the-Art Cataract Surgery for San Diego & La Jolla Patients

The good news is that cataract surgery is one of the safest and most successful medical procedures performed today. Our skilled ophthalmologists at Torrey Pines Eye Care utilize the latest techniques to remove your cloudy natural lens and replace it with a clear intraocular lens (IOL). This innovative replacement lens not only restores clear vision but can also offer the exciting benefit of reducing or even eliminating your need for glasses or contact lenses after your procedure.

Exploring Different Types of Cataracts:

Cataracts can develop in various ways, and our specialists are adept at identifying and managing each type:

  • Nuclear Sclerotic Cataract: The most common form, this age-related cataract causes the center of the natural lens to gradually harden and turn a yellowish or brownish color. It often leads to increased nearsightedness and difficulty seeing at a distance.
  • Posterior Subcapsular Cataract (PSC): This type forms as a small, opaque plaque on the back surface of the lens, often developing more quickly than nuclear sclerotic cataracts. Patients with diabetes, those who have undergone radiation treatment, or individuals with a history of eye trauma may be more susceptible to PSCs.
  • Cortical Cataract: Characterized by white or grayish, wedge-shaped opacities that begin at the edge of the lens and extend inward, resembling spokes on a wheel.
  • Combined Form Cataracts: It's common for patients to develop a combination of these cataract types, further emphasizing the need for a thorough and personalized diagnosis.

When to Consider Cataract Surgery?

In the early stages, a mild cataract often manifests as a shift in your glasses prescription, typically making you more nearsighted (myopic). This can lead to difficulties with distance vision and visual disturbances like glare, especially during nighttime driving. Often, a minor update to your glasses or contact lens prescription can temporarily improve your vision enough to perform daily activities. We recommend regular monitoring every six to twelve months for mild cataracts to track their progression.

However, as a cataract progresses, even frequent changes in your prescription will no longer be sufficient to provide clear vision. At this point, the only effective and permanent solution is to remove the cloudy lens. Fortunately, modern cataract surgery is a highly refined procedure, known for its safety, effectiveness, excellent visual outcomes, and minimal discomfort.

TP eye care is the best. They take the time to give top notch care. My cataract surgery was flawless. This is in spite of the difficulties added due to a previous Lasik procedure. Dr Z took the time to explain the options and procedure. Then when the day came he and his team were fantastic.

Dr. Zaveri is not only one of the best Ophthalmologist but one heck of a surgeon. My cataracts were a little complicated but he made the surgery look like a piece of cake. Now I have almost a 20/20 vision for distance.

He has excellent bed side manners on making the patient feel at ease and explains the patient in layman terms the whole procedure which gave me the confidence to proceed with surgery.

His staff is equally caring and very friendly.
Thank you Dr. Zaveri for a job well done.
