For residents of La Jolla, Carlsbad, Encinitas, and Del Mar, the active, sunny San Diego lifestyle is a source of joy – but it can also contribute to conditions like Pterygium, often known as "Surfer's Eye." This reddish, triangular growth on the white of your eye (conjunctiva) is a common concern in our community, caused primarily by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, dust, and wind. While a pterygium might start as a minor irritation, it can progress to cause significant visual and cosmetic issues if left untreated.

At Torrey Pines Eye Care, we are proud to offer specialized Pterygium surgery and ocular surface reconstruction led by Dr. Zaveri, an exceptionally skilled and widely regarded surgeon. With over years of dedicated service to the San Diego community, Dr. Zaveri takes immense pride in personally helping countless patients who work outdoors, including surfers, athletes, firefighters, military personnel, and Coast Guard officers. His expertise is distinguished by a personalized approach, delivering exceptional cosmetic and functional results for each individual seeking pterygium treatment and a natural appearance, empowering them to confidently continue their active and professional lives.
A pterygium develops as the tissues on the white of the eye become irritated and thicken due to environmental factors, particularly UV light, which is abundant here in Southern California. Over time, new blood vessels and scar tissue can form, leading to a visible growth that encroaches upon the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye).
If a pterygium continues to grow, it can:
Distort Vision: By changing the curvature of the cornea, potentially inducing or worsening astigmatism.
Cause Vision Loss: If it grows over the pupil, completely blocking sight.
Lead to Discomfort: Symptoms often include chronic eye irritation, redness, a gritty sensation, and excessive tearing.
Impact Aesthetics: Creating a noticeable cosmetic effect on the eye.
Individuals who spend significant time outdoors, especially near water (like surfers, military personnel, police officers, firefighters, coast guard, and gardeners – a common demographic in our area), are at a higher risk. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, a comprehensive eye exam is crucial for accurate diagnosis.

Dr. Zaveri is an expert pterygium surgeon in La Jolla with extensive experience in ocular surface reconstruction. He understands that each patient and case is unique in terms of anatomy and presentation. He takes pride in helping patients, young and old, manage their chronic red eyes and pterygium conditions with a personalized approach, first exploring medical management, and then considering surgery when it aligns with the patient's desires and needs.
Precision and Customization: Carefully assessing your specific pterygium to tailor the surgical technique for optimal outcomes.
Exceptional Cosmetic Results: Restoring the natural appearance of the eye, which is a key concern for many patients.
Minimizing Recurrence: Utilizing advanced techniques to significantly reduce the chance of the pterygium growing back.
While medical eye drops and lubricating ointments can sometimes manage early irritation, surgical removal is often the most effective solution for progressive or bothersome pterygium. Dr. Zaveri utilizes advanced techniques for pterygium removal, often incorporating grafts to ensure superior healing and minimize recurrence:
Amniotic Membrane Transplantation: This cutting-edge technique involves carefully removing the pterygium and transplanting a specialized amniotic membrane graft. This natural tissue promotes healthy healing, significantly reduces inflammation, and is highly effective in restoring the natural appearance of the eye while minimizing the risk of recurrence.
Conjunctival Autograft Surgery: In this procedure, the pterygium is removed, and a healthy piece of your own conjunctival tissue (autograft) is meticulously transferred from a less exposed area of your upper eye to cover the surgical site. Utilizing your own tissue aids the healing process and dramatically reduces recurrence rates without any damaging effects on your vision.
Dr. Zaveri frequently employs a no-stitch technique for pterygium surgery, utilizing a special biological adhesive called Tisseel glue to secure the graft.

Excellent service from start to finish. The whole procedure was seamless and painless. Dr. Zaveri and the surgical team did a fantastic job making me feel at ease. If I had more eyes I would definitely do it again.

TP eye care is the best. They take the time to give top notch care. My cataract surgery was flawless. This in spite of the difficulties added due to a previous Lasic procedure. Dr Z took the time to explain the options and procedure. Then when the day came he and his team were fantastic.
