Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD) is a leading cause of severe vision loss for individuals over 65, though it can begin as early as age 40. At Torrey Pines Eye Care, we understand the profound impact ARMD can have on your ability to read, drive, and recognize faces – crucial for the active lifestyles. While there's no cure, our unique approach emphasizes early screening, wellness, and prevention to help protect your sight.
Macular degeneration occurs when the macula, the central part of your retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision, begins to deteriorate over time. This vital area allows us to focus on fine details, making damage to it a cause of blurry vision, distorted or wavy lines, and small blind spots. Left untreated, ARMD can lead to significant, irreversible vision loss.
While natural aging is a primary factor, residents of San Diego and La Jolla should be particularly aware of additional risk factors prevalent in our area, such as excessive UV light exposure from abundant sunshine. Genetics and smoking also significantly contribute to the disease.

At Torrey Pines Eye Care, we don't just treat macular degeneration; we partner with you to preserve your vision. What sets us apart:
Unmatched Time with Patients: We believe in a personalized approach. Our expert doctors dedicate ample time to thoroughly discuss your concerns, lifestyle, and family history, ensuring you feel heard and fully understand your condition and options.
Detailed Exams with Up-to-Date Testing: Our commitment to early screening is powered by advanced diagnostics. We utilize state-of-the-art equipment for retinal screening, including high-definition wide-field photos and Zeiss Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT) for unparalleled detail of your macula and retina. This allows for precise detection and monitoring of the subtlest changes.
Expert, Compassionate Doctors: Drs. Zaveri and Bainter bring extensive experience in managing complex eye conditions. Their deep understanding of retinal health, coupled with a compassionate and patient-centered approach, ensures you receive the highest standard of care in a supportive environment.

There are two main types of macular degeneration:
Dry Macular Degeneration (Non-neovascular): This is the most common type and typically progresses slowly, making early symptoms harder to notice. Our focus is on meticulous monitoring through regular, detailed exams. Treatment often involves specialized vision aids, and specific vitamins and supplements (AREDS/AREDS2 formulations) tailored to your needs.
Wet Macular Degeneration (Neovascular): This type progresses more rapidly and often presents with more sudden, noticeable symptoms. It occurs when abnormal blood vessels leak fluid or blood into the back of the eye, causing permanent tissue damage. Our advanced diagnostic tools allow for prompt detection, and treatment typically involves injectable medications (anti-VEGF) to stop bleeding and prevent further damage, administered by our experienced specialists.
Regular, Detailed Eye Exams: This is the most crucial step for early detection – particularly vital for dry ARMD, which can be subtle. Our comprehensive exams are designed to catch the earliest signs and prevent debilitating vision damage.
Nutrient-Rich Diet: We emphasize a diet rich in eye-healthy vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including Vitamins A, C, E, folic acid, zinc, beta-carotene, lutein, and zeaxanthin. Foods like leafy green vegetables, citrus, and colorful melons are excellent choices.
Smoking Cessation: Quitting smoking is one of the most impactful steps you can take to lower your risk and slow disease progression.
Strategic UV Protection: Given the abundant sunshine in La Jolla and across San Diego, always wearing high-quality sunglasses that block 100%

TP eye care is the best. They take the time to give top notch care. My cataract surgery was flawless. This in spite of the difficulties added due to a previous Lasic procedure. Dr Z took the time to explain the options and procedure. Then when the day came he and his team were fantastic.
